Photo & Video Documentary
In Latin America, a movement has secured women's right to choose, while in the U.S., reproductive autonomy lost federal protection. As the U.S. regresses in women’s rights, Latin America advances gender justice. Lack of abortion access often reflects broader gaps in maternal healthcare, affecting women and children long-term.
This project, conceived, developed, and executed by eight photographers and visual storytellers — six of them mothers— under the umbrella of their collective, Ayün, explore maternal healthcare in Latin America. It intersects with issues like climate change, racism, and inequality, moving beyond the abortion debate to show how maternal healthcare shapes society. The project highlights how communities are addressing reproductive injustice with innovative solutions.

Ayün Fotógrafas is a collective of eight female photographers and visual storytellers, united by Latin America. The group is made up of Ana María Arévalo Gosen, Andrea Hernández Briceño, Danielle Villasana, Johis Alarcón, Karla Gachet, Mariceu Erthal, Sarah Pabst and Tamara Merino. Brought together by their passion for telling stories, they just celebrated their third anniversary. Three years of collaboration, mutual support and inspiration.
